Beverly (Bev) Jewett died on March 4th, 2013, just short of his 63rd birthday, following a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was born and raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick, the youngest son of Dr. Beverly Jewett and Dr. Marie Jewett. He is survived by his numerous relatives - his immediate family, wife Susan, daughter Victoria and her husband Dan, daughter Elizabeth, and son Thomas; also his mother, brothers, Mark (France) and Lawrence (Bonnie), and sisters, Elizabeth Kitchen (Paul) and Anne Jewett (Andrew); nephews (Luke, Mark, Nicholas, Michael, David, Alexander) and niece (Ashley), who all loved him dearly.
From an early age, he knew he wanted to be a pilot and, with his father’s encouragement, he pursued studies in engineering at the University of New Brunswick with that objective. He was fortunate to be taken under the wing of family friends, Dr. Ed Reynolds and Dr. John Likely, who generously made their aircraft available to him so that he could better prepare for his chosen profession. After graduating with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, and briefly flying fire-fighting planes, he joined Air Canada in 1974, becoming a captain in 1997 and flying a number of aircraft, culminating in the Boeing 777.
His love for aviation extended to his private time, and he spent many hours rebuilding and improving his 1950 Short-Wing Piper, as well as building his own hangar and landing field at his farm in Vankleek Hill. Following his retirement from Air Canada in 2010, he and Susan circumnavigated North America.
Bev was gifted with the careful, calm and steady demeanour that makes a great pilot. All who flew with him in his Piper were impressed by his thorough attention and dedication to detail, even on a short neighbourhood flight, and could readily see him carrying through with the same level of detailed care and attention he exhibited when “on the job”.
He had many other interests - primarily his family, of course, but also working his farm and woodlot, milling his own lumber and creating an extensive woodworking shop.
A naturally-gifted athlete, he played varsity football and hockey at UNB, rugby and hockey at Fredericton High School, and was an accomplished golfer.
His personality was large and generous. Knowledgeable and opinionated on a wide variety of subjects, he had a rich sense of humour and always enjoyed being provocative.
His wide circle of friends, from growing up in New Brunswick and in the airline community, provides testimony to all these qualities. He will be sadly missed, taken far too soon, but remembered with love and pride.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Hospice Simcoe in Barrie (hospicesimcoe.ca). Many thanks to the staff and volunteers for their excellent care and welcoming environment.
