Brother of Mary Ann Adamson and her husband John, and Nancy North. Predeceased by his parents Ernie and Islay Nicholson.
Jim was born and raised in Midland, graduated from Midland High School, articled with the Ontario Department of Highways and was commissioned as an Ontario Land Surveyor in February, 1961, and later obtained his Canada Lands Surveyor certification. Jim practised as a Land Surveyor until his retirement in 2008.
Throughout his life Jim was actively involved in the community, including the Midland Minor Hockey Association, the Georgian Bay Minor Hockey Association, the Y’s Men Club, the Midland Curling Club, the Huronia Masonic Lodge, Rotary, and St. Paul’s United Church. Professionally, he was involved in many aspects of the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors, serving on the Board of Examiners, on Council, and as the President of the Association for their Centennial Year in 1992.
His love of music began with the Midland Brass Band in the 1950’s and later with the Penetanguishene Legion Pipes and Drums, continued with the Orillia Wind Ensemble and then many happy years with the Orillia Silver Band. Jim’s dedication to his church was strong and varied. Beginning with the young people’s group, choir, many years an Elder and then Chair of the Board of Trustees for 10 years. His love of Georgian Bay began early, cottaging at Honey Harbour at Eagle’s Nest and continued with his own family at Whistler’s Cove.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Coutts, Dr. Darwish, and Dr. Blake for their care and kindness to Jim. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Lam, Dr. Poulopoulos, Dr. Tascona and the staff of the Dialysis Units at the Penetanguishene Site of GBGH and Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Orillia, for many years of care.
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church, Midland, on Saturday April 16, at 1pm, with visitation from 11:00 am until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations to the AOLS Educational Foundation, the Orillia Silver Band, or charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
