Richard Nils Olsen is mourned by his son, Kurt Canow, and his daughter in law, Anja Canow. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Huebner Canow Olsen, his brothers Oscar and Charles Olsen, and his sisters Annie Montague, Iris Lawrence, and Nova Dean.
Richard grew up in poverty in Erith, Kent, England. He, his 2 brothers, and 3 sisters were raised by his widowed mother. After serving in Italy and Africa during WWII, he emigrated to Ontario, Canada, where he lived for most of his life, except briefly in England and Germany. He was always honest, wise, calm, kind, respectful, and thankful. He kept the same job until retirement and was a well-liked hard worker. He remained a bachelor until 1969, when he married my mother, Maria, who had been widowed in 1965. He was always loving, and he took care of my mother until her death in 1997. Thoughtful and independent, he chose to give up driving at 75, and to enter the Villa Care Center in Midland at 89, still in good health. He gave up all his worldly possessions and did not even wish to take along a suit. His needs were simple, but his generosity and selflessness were boundless.
